Cuckfield, in 1918, is a union town and parish, pleasantly situated on an eminence in the centre of the county and about 2 miles west from the London and Brighton railway station at Haywards Heath, 14 miles from Brighton, 39 miles from London, 10 south-east from Horsham and 14 north-west from Lewes.
The town is lighted with gas from works established in 1861, and water from Balcombe.
The population in 1911, including 19 officers and 187 inmates in the poor law institution was 1,899 in the civil and 2,678 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Public Houses included the Green Cross Inn, Kings Head Hotel, Kings Head Tap, Rose & Crown, Ship Inn, Talbot Hotel, Talbot Tap, Wheatsheaf and the White Hart Inn.
