Tunstall Public Houses
TUNSTALL in 1874.
TUNSTALL is a pleasant village, 7 miles N.E. of Woodbridge, and about the same
distance W. by S. of Aldborough, and S. by W. of Saxmundham, in Plomesgate
Union, and Woodbridge County Court district. Its parish contains 708
inhabitants, and 2863 acres of land, including the hamlet of Dunningworth, on
the south side of Snape Bridge, on the river Alde, 5 miles W. of Aldborough,
where there is a wharf and extensive maltings and warehouses, as noticed with
Snaps. The south-east part of the parish is a sandy heath, where there is a
tumulus, in which a Roman urn was found, about the year 1834, containing ashes,
two coins, and a piece of a sword three inches long. The Earl of Guilford is
lord of the manor of Banyard, in Tunstall, but the greater part of the parish
belongs to J . G. Sheppard. Esq., Lord Rendlesham, and the Rev. F. L. Hayward,
B.C.L. THE Church (St. Michael) is an ancient structure, with a tower containing
six bells. The Rev. F. L. Hayward, B.C.L., is patron and incumbent of the
rectory, which is valued in K.B. at £16. 10s. 5d., but has now 42 acres of
globe, and a yearly rent-charge of £541, in lieu of tithes. Dunningworth was
formerly a separate parish, and had a church, which went to decay in the latter
part of the 16th century, when its rectory was consolidated with Tunstall.
Dunningworth Hall, a good farm house, is the residence of Mr. James Girling. In
Chapel field where Dunningworth church is supposed to have stood, several
skeletons were found in 1841. There is a BAPTIST CHAPEL at Tunstall, built in
1808, and enlarged in 1838, and now under the ministry of the Rev. J. B. Lamb.
THE NATIONAL School, erected in 1872, in lieu of that built in 1830, cost
upwards of £500, It is under Government inspection, supported by grant,
voluntary contributions, pupils' pence, &c., and attended by about 75 children.
Post OFFICE at Mrs. F. E. Syred's. Letters arrive at 5.40 am and are despatched
at 7.50 p.m. to Wickham Market, which is the nearest Money Order Office. A
single line for goods traffic, with a terminus at Snape Bridge, joins the
East Suffolk branch of the Great Eastern Railway between Wickham Market and
Saxmundham junction.
