Shelly is a parish and village, in the hundred, union, and rural
deanery of Samford, county court district of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Suffolk,
and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 3 miles south-by-east from Hadleigh
station, near the river Brett. The church (All Saints), an ancient structure,
has a nave, chancel, tower on the north side, and 5 bells. The living is a
perpetual curacy, annual value £72, in the gift of Mrs Cripps, and held by the
Rev Henry Jones, M.A., who resides at Boxford. Mrs Cripps is lady of the manor
and impropriator of the tithes. The population in 1861 was 142, and the area is
928 acres.
