SHADINGFIELD is a parish and village, in Wangford union, hundred, and
rural deanery, Beccles county court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk, diocese
of Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 ½ miles south from Beccles, 4 north-by-west from
Wangford and 6 north -east-by-north from Halesworth. The church of St. John is
an old building, with a tower and 1 bell: it consists of a nave and chancel, and
a porch on the south side: a new pulpit was erected in 1841, the east window
being restored at the same time. The register dates from 1539. The living is a
rectory, tithes commuted at £305 per annum, with 7 ½ acres of glebe land and
residence, in the gift of Lord Braybrooke, of Audley, Essex, and held by the
Rev. Charles Thomas Scott, B.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge, who resides
in The Hall, a large white brick mansion, with well wooded grounds. Lord of the
manor, John Garden, Esq. The population in 1801 was 209, and
the area is 1,369 acres.
