Rattlesden 1865 Post Office Directory

RATTLESDEN is a parish and considerable village, in
Thedwestry hundred and rural deanery, Stow union and
county court district, archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese
of Ely, West Suffolk, 5 miles west from Stowmarket, 85
from London, and 9 east-south-east from Bury St. Edmund's,
situated on a small stream which joins the river Gipping at
Combs. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient stone
structure, in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, has
nave, aisles, chancel, small tower containing 5 bells, and
neat spire: the interior is very lofty, with fine open roof of
carved oak over nave and chancel: the pews and font are
very old: there are tablets to the Revs. Walter Clopton and
Richard Moseley (former rectors), who left charities to be
distributed in the parish. The register dates from 1558.
The living is a rectory, annual value 890, with about 50
acres of glebe, in the gift of John Barney, Esq., and held
by the Rev. John Barney, M.A., of Magdalen College, Cam-
bridge. There is a National school, partly endowed, also a
Sunday school in the village. A Baptist chapel was erected
in 1808, and rebuilt in 1833. The soil is heavy, and subsoil
clay, yielding good crops of the usual kind. Clopton Hall, the handsome residence of Major Windsor Parker, M.P. for West Suffolk, is half a mile north-east, and is situated on an eminence, surrounded by woods, plantations, and preserves: the south front overlooks some well stocked fish ponds, neat park, and grounds tastefully laid out. Rattlesden Hall, the residence of Uriah Phillips, Esq., is west of the village. F. L. Cocktedge, Esq., is lord of the manor. The population in 1801 was 1,117, and the area is 3,254 acres.
POYSTREET GREEN is a hamlet half a mile south; Clopton Green is a mile north-west; High Town Green is 2 miles south-west; Pot Ash is a mile west.
Parish Clerk, Jeremiah Punchard.
