NOWTON is a small neat village and parish, in the hundred, union, and
rural deanery of Thingoe, county court district of Bury St. Edmund's,
archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 2 miles south from
Bury station. The church of St. Peter is a neat building, with 6 bells, nave and
chancel; was enlarged and repewed in 1843, at the cost of H.J. Oakes, Esq., and
J. H. Porteus Oakes, Esq. The living is a rectory, valued in 1835 at £314, in
the gift of the Marquis of Bristol, and held by the Rev. Hervey Aston Adamson
Oakes, M.A., of Jesus College, Cambridge. Mr. Oakes supports a small school here
for the instruction of poor children. The population in 1861 was 186, and the
area is about 1,157 acres. The mansion of Nowton Court is the residence of Henry
James Oakes, Esq., D.L., who is also lord of the manor.
