BENHALL in Plomesgate hundred Suffolk 1865
BENHALL is a parish in Plomesgate hundred and union, Framlingham and
Saxmundham county court district, East Suffolk, consisting of small detached
villages called Benhall Green, Benhall Street, &c.; the remote parts of the
parish are about 2 � miles west-south-west from Saxmundham. The church of St.
Mary is about half a mile from the main road leading from Ipswich to Yarmouth
through Saxmundham; it is in good repair, having had a new transept, with
schoolroom and vestry, built at the sole expense of the Rev. Edmd. Hollond,
M.A.; the tower is constructed of flint, in the Norman style, and contains 6
bells: in the interior of the church is a very handsome monument to the late Sir
Edward Duke, and also memorials to the late Mr. Edward Hollond. The register
dates from 1558. The living is a vicarage, annual value �200, with residence, in
the gilt of the Rev. Edmund Hollond, and held by the Rev. Horace Mann Blakiston,
B.D.; the Rev. Edwin Arthur Watkins is the curate. The late Sir Edward Duke left
the sum of �1,000 for the support of a Free school in this parish, and �500 was
also left by Mr. Edward Hollond, the late proprietor of Benhall Lodge, for the
same purpose. There are also National and Infant schools at Benhall Green, and a
school at Benhall Street, supported by the Rev. Edmd. Hollond, M.A. ; the number
of children educated at these establishments exceeds 100. The only family seat
in this parish is Benhall Lodge, the residence of the Rev. Edmund Hollond, M.A.,
who is lord of the manor, situate in a large and beautifully wooded park. The
population amounted in 1861 to 678, and the parish contains 2,156 acres, of
various soils, but chiefly clay.
