ATHELINGTON is a parish and small village, 4 ½ miles south-east from the borough of Eye, and 8 south-east from Mellis station, in Hoxne hundred, union and rural deanery, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, Suffolk archdeaconry, Norwich diocese, East Suffolk. The church of St. Peter is a small building, with nave and chancel in one continuous roof, and square tower: it is supposed to have been built in the time of Edgar Atheling; his bust and that of his wife arc placed in the eastern wall in the chancel, and are in good preservation: the oldest tomb in the churchyard is to one of the Brook family, 300 years old, of whom Francis Capper Brook, Esq., of Ufford, Suffolk, is the only existing known descendant: the oldest register dates from 1694. The living is a discharged rectory, annual value £155, with 10 acres of glebe land, a portion of which, is in the parish of Horham, In the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the Rev. John Edward Alexander Inge, M.A., of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. The population in 1861 was 115, and the area in acres, 487; the gross estimated rental is £865, and the rateable value £745. The land is n clayey soil, and belongs principally to the executors of Thomas Green, Esq.
