Baker & Basket, 16 Leman street, Whitechapel E1

This is the Plasterers Arms, 12 Red Lion street in 1811 and other Sun Fire Insurance records until at least 1836.
At 12 Redlion Street in 1841 and earlier; Road renamed by 1851;At 8 Leman Street in 1851 to 1871; This pub has been demolished, probably a victim of road-widening, later at 2 Leman Street. ***

The Baker and Basket is at 16 Leman street, Whitechapel. In the Sun Fire Office insurance records of 1816, a William Day is the victualler. By 1823, the same records list William Wilson. The London Gazette of 1823 notes a James Towler as Licensed Victualler & Cellerman to a Wine Merchant. The 1833 Pigots directory has John Rudd at the Baker & Basket, and James Hutchins by 1839 until at least 1850. Edward Bonney is the next victualler noted in 1851, followed by Benjamin Staines from at least 1852 to 1856 and maybe later.

The Proceedings of the Old Bailey in 1856 refer to Sam Bailey as the Pot boy, and in 1861 the outgoing licensee is William Martin. References to licensee changes are in the local newspapers. A George Church is noy only the new licensee in may 1861, he is also noted for leaving at this time!

Henry Finch is the licensee in 1862, but he dies as his wife Sarah is next listed in November 1864, and she passes this licensed record on to Samuel Simpson Smith at this time. He appears to hold a record at present, by holding the license for a further ten years until 1874.
