Regent Street was renamed Regency Street (its name today) some time between 1871 and 1881, but house numbering was not changed. This pub was at 1 Regent Street in 1841, and at 53 Regent
Street until at least 1871. In 1891 it occupied 53 and 55 Regency Street.
[There are some inconsistencies between the Census records and The Era�s
records of transfers. According to the latter, Charles Sneezum should have
been licensee in 1861, rather than George Prentis. However, while Mr Sneezum
was a Licensed Victualler at the Cooper�s Arms in Southwark with his wife
Emma E Sneezum in 1851, in 1861 he was a farmer in Chertsey, Surrey! A
Charles Sneezum married Emma Elizabeth Prentis in St James Westminster in
1837. The coincidence of name (and birthplace) suggests that the landlord of
the Regent Arms in 1861 was a relative of Mrs Sneezum. Again, in 1871, the
Census gives William Butcher as licensee, whereas The Era has him transfer
the license to Joseph Patterson a year earlier. Perhaps in this case Mr
Patterson transferred it back again � there are records of this happening
elsewhere.] *
