Swan Inn, Holborn Bridge, St Sepulchre EC1
The map of Rocques in 1746 clearly shows the Swan Inn north of Holborn Bridge. This also links in to a reference from Ogilbys map of 1677 when it is noted as reference A89.
This major coaching inn was present before 1698, as noted above, and was also called the White Swan. It survived until at least 1839, but is now long-since demolished. The address also given as Snow Hill. There is a Swan, later the
White Swan at 52 Skinner Street. Parts of Skinner Street was originally Snow Hill. The Swan Inn, is historically listed as being north out of Snowhill at Fleet Market (1799). **

In the English Civil War newsbooks there is the following reference to The Swan at Holborn Bridge, London: ***
"Then Report being made in the Lords house, that one Mr. Turbervile, a Sussex Gentleman, had packed up great store of Arms and Ammunition at the swan at Holborne Bridge, but to what purpose or whither bound unknown."
Reference date: Tuesday 19 July 1642, in "A Perfect Diurnall of the Passages in Parliament", British Library E.202[22].
There are also a number of early tokens (1649-1672) which reference early businesses, including the Black Swan, at Holborn Bridge in 1662 with Thomas Day - see B1395.
“ June the 11th.
“ By the Commissioners for licensing and regulating of Hackney Coaches. “ Ordered that all such Coachmen whose names are not yet entered, and who do really intend to provide horses according to the Act of Parliament, and such convenient Coaches and servants as shall be approved by the Commissioners, and have no other Trade or occupation, shall appear before the Commissioners for that service on Monday, the 16th , at the Black-Swan, in Holbourn, at two in the afternoon, and bring in their Certificates that they have served as Hackney-Coachmen.

Holborn bridge was the ascent from the now top of Farringdon street to Ely place, where stood the palace of the bishops of Ely, and the garden, now builded on and called Hatton garden. Westward to the city boundaries, terminating the wide part near Gray's-inn lane end, called Holborn bars, was formerly called Low Holborn, or latterly, as on the tokens, Holborn. High Holborn is that portion of the main street from Holborn bars to Drury lane. Holborn is a perversion of Old-bourne.

1737 (Friday, 2 September) - "About 2 a-clock this morning, a Fire broke out
at Mr Tranter's, the Swan Alehouse at Holborn Bridge, which consumed the
said house, and burnt some chambers at the Swan Inn. Mrs Tranter and the
servant maid perished in the Flames; and Mr Tranter, his two daughters, and
the rest of the family escaped with the utmost difficulty."
