The pub had been built on the site of the church of St Leonard Eastcheap which was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The gap between the pub and the next building was the entrance to the graveyard of the former church.
The Norfolk Hotel was demolished during the building of Eastcheap Station (now Monument) which opened in 1884, and was rebuilt as The Monument on the opposite corner of Fish Street Hill.
