My Grand Aunt, Elizabeth Fountain, (nee Bailey), was the landlady of the pub
with her husband Joseph Hector George Fountain, from 1945 to 1961. She was a
formidable lady, originally from Bow & when they took over the pub is was a
frequent haunt of local prostitutes. On taking the pub over she threw them
all out, in true Eastenders fashion, shouting 'Get outta my pub & don't come
back!', they heeded her advice & never returned! *
Joe & Lily turned the pub around so it became a well known meeting place for
actors from the West End stage productions & assorted theatrical 'Lovies'.
Many of them stayed in nearby Curzon Street, probably the most famous
resident at the time was the actor Vincent Price, with whom they became
close friends. *
The pub was also renown for its 'lock ins' & many a tale has been told of
some very boozy late nights, with my Grandad playing the piano. Incidentally
my grandad was also the chef for the pub during this time. *
Joe died in 1952, but Lily kept the pub for a further 9 years after his
death, before retiring in 1961, which she enjoyed until her death in 1974. *
