John Rocques map of 1746 clearly shows Halfway House noted, in Commercial road, and at the correct position. In 1809, named the George, and known by the name of the Half Way house, Commercial road. At George Terrace, Commercial Road east in 1869 & earlier; This pub was established in 1654, and largely re-built in its present form in 1891.  **

13 January 1808/John Maynard was indicted for feloniously stealing on the 3d of December , four shirts, value 16 s. and two shifts, value 2 s. the property of Charles Cliff .
Lucy  Cliff. I am the wife of Charles Cliff , he keeps the Half Way House on the Commercial-road . On the 30th of September, I had a quantity of shirts hanging out on the ground opposite of the house; I saw them in the ground at four o'clock from my window; about a quarter past four the prisoner was brought into my house with a bag of linen; I examined the bag, it contained four shirts of Mr. Cliff's, one shirt of mine, and one a young lady's that I had to assist me. I know the things.

1809/Robert Williams was indicted for feloniously stealing on the 6th of January , four quart pewter pots, value 4 s. and three pint pewter pots, value 1 s. 6 d. the property of Charles Cliffe .
Charles Cliffe - I am a publican , I keep the George, known by the name of the Half Way house, Commercial road . The Will of Charles Cliffe mentions his son Charles Garrard Cliffe, a sail maker; his wife Harriot Cliffe, to whom he leaves a leasehold in a tavern or public house known as the George or Halfway House with the Brewhouse, Stables and Outhouses being and fronting in Commercial road.
He also mentions Edmund Harrison Cliffe and Henry Frederick Cliffe by his former wife.
