In the 1911 census, John Palmer Salter is the manager and William Banfield is a barman at the Lock & Key, Smithfield. William Banfield and Alice Maud Banfield (nee Milbourn) list the address of 140 Goswell road, the White Horse & Cross Keys; in 1915 and again in 1918. They later run a number of public houses, possibly the Halfway House near to the Old Vic; and almost certainly the Queen’s Arms, Portland Street , Walworth, SE17. Alice's brother was Ernest Milbourn who ran the Golden Fleece in Elstead.  ***

I have been doing some more research and I have found that my grandparents William Banfield and his wife Alice were managing the Queen’s Arms in Portland Street from 1929 to 1933. The photo of William is outside the Queen’s Arms – although the pub itself has gone the houses opposite are still there and match the houses shown in the photograph. ***
