My great, great, great grandfather was the licensed victualler of the Bank of Friendship, Mile End. ***+
I thought you might like a little extract from the will of Thomas Hemingway, Thomas died in 1856, he was retired at the time.
"And I give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Hemingway my Son and William Davis their executors, administrators and assigns, All that my leasehold Public House called or known by the sign of the Bank of Friendship, situate in Bancrofts Place, Mile End Road aforesaid, now on lease to Messieurs Charrington and Company, Brewers, for the term of twenty one years from the twenty fourth day of June one thousand eight hundred and forty one, at the present yearly rent of one hundred pounds.”

I have Thomas Hemingways' death record and burial details - died Worthing
1856, aged 72, and buried in the London & Tower Hamlets Cemetery in February
1856; in the family grave purchased, when his son William died.
His son, Thomas II, must have taken over when the lease on the Bank
Friendship (1841 for 21 years) expired in 1862.
He died in 1869 and his sister Mary Ann took over in 1869.
The Kate Hemingway (1869 Proceeds of the Old Bailey) was the daughter of
Thomas II and Mary Jane (nee Dredge).
I am not sure who the Mrs Hemingway 1870 is it could be Thomas’ I wife
Elizabeth who died in 1873 or Mary Jane wife of Thomas II, both were widows
at that time.

of The Bank of Friendship, Mile End, licensed victualler, who died on
November 2 last and of whose will of December 20 1889, with codicils of May
5, 1891, and January 27, 1896, the executrix and executors are his widow,
Mrs Louisa Clara parsons and his sons, William Farnham James Parsons and
Walter Parsons, has been valued at £45,722 1s 10d and the gross value of the
whole of the estate at £66, 653 1s 2d. The testator bequeathed to Mrs
Parsons, £300, the use and enjoyment of his residence, and incoke of his
estate, which subject to her life interest, is left in trust as to £3,500
for his son Charles Flower Parsons and as to the ultimate residue of his
estate in equal shares for all his children.

My Great Grandmother was Theresa Harriet Chipchase, (Previous married name
Howell and maiden name Nazer) and was a widow when she took on the pub in
the late 1930’s. The pub was bombed during the war and my great grandmother
and her sister were trapped in the cellar. Having survived that she moved to
Tufnell Park (the pub having been destroyed) where she was bombed again this
time she did not survive but died in Highgate Hospital on the 9th April,
1941. *+

I am the grandson of Theresa Harriet Howell, who was the last known landlady
of the above pub until it was destroyed by enemy action in 1941. *++
My late mother, Mrs Lilian Howell, (1916 - 2013), the wife of Frank Howell,
Theresa' second son stated. "The Licquor Licence was held by the said Mr
Harris due to the fact that my grandmother was barred from holding such
licence because of her criminal record. She was said to have served a 3 day
prison sentence due to the failure of payment of her local authority council
rates. Consequently she was prohibited to obtain her licence."
The pub was run by my granny, reputed to be a bit of a dragon, but as
mentioned above, trading under the name of her "fancy man", my mums words,
not mine, known affectionately by one and all as "Dodger" Harris. *++
