I know a lot about the Ayley family on the female side. The old lady in 1891C (Sarah Smallman) was born in Wellington, Salop as Sarah Owen in 1805 and was the youngest sister of the mother of Victorian diarist Mrs Hannah Munby nee Cullwick (see Wikipedia) and therefore she was an aunt of Hannah Munby. Her father John Owen (1755-1821) was a groom for the Eyton family at magnificent Eyton Hall near Wellington in Salop and her mother Anne (nee Owen but a totally different Owen family to her husband John) was ladies maid to Mrs Eyton
Mrs Sarah Smallman would have actually been 86 in 1891C and 88 when she died in 1893 - so someone had not worked out the maths correctly.
Her youngest daughter Sarah Ann Smallman was born in 1851 when Sarah was 46 years old!! The family were farming Pare Hill Farm near Albrighton - just a few miles north of Shrewsbury - they referred to it always as Perrills Farm. It was 200 acres and rented. The family fell on hard times and in the 1860's her father (Charles Skelton Smallman) was declared bankrupt. Hannah Cullwick was working in Maida Vale at the time as a maid of all work - for a beer merchant by the formidable name of Dodshon Foster - and she went round the streets begging money for her Uncle and Aunt 'Small'.
Sarah Ann Ayley seems to have been the least affected in the Smallman family by this devastating change in their standard of living. She was a favourite cousin of Hannah (Hammah Cullwick's youngest out of over 50 cousins) and was pretty and vivacious. She was working in service in London before she married William Ayley. By the 1901C the Ayleys were running the Prince of Wales Hotel on the Isle of Wight.
I hope this adds a bit of flesh to the bone - it looks a lovely tavern and I think old Sarah Smallwood deserved to spend her final years in a place like that after some pretty difficult years. **
