The Feathers Hotel in Market street is really the outcome of the old Coach and Horses Inn which had its entrance in China lane.
But part of the present Feathers Hotel was a private house erected according to the facade figures in 1722, and subsequently the house was altered into a shop which the elder John Pritt served his time to the saddle making business prior to his taking the Kings Arms hotel.

At an early hour on Monday evening a fire of an alarming nature broke out at the Feathers Hotel, Lancaster, kept by Mr Fisher. There were fifteen persons sleeping in the house, and all access to the staircases was cut off by the flames, the inmates had to make their escape by ladders or by dropping from the windows. In doing so, one man had his ankle fractured.
The fire was got under control in about an hour and was fortunately almost entirely confined to the bar and the bedrooms over it, and these were completely gutted. The furniture and fixtures in the rooms adjoining are also much damaged. The loss is covered by insurance.
The officers of the Dukes Own Yeomanry Cavalry, whose headquarters are immediately opposite the Feathers Hotel, rendered the fire brigade valuable assistance as did also a number of privates.
