Also known as the Greyhound

                  Greyhound & Hare - 2004 - photo by Lal.

The Greyhound in Balaam Street is one of the five oldest pubs in Plaistow mention in 1742, and was formerly the Greyhound and Hare, the name to which it has now reverted after a spell as 'The Sportsman' in the trendy 1970s. Rebuilt in 1773, parts of the present building although altered, may date from that time.

My Great, great grandfather 'William Wood' was the publican here in 1891. Although the pub is not named he is described as being the publican and living at 174 Balaam Street, Plaistow in the 1891 census. He was previously the landlord at the Hallsville tavern. ***
