Knowstone pub history index
The Snow family built our house on Exmoor and in fact some of the descendants have come to visit us here. ***
In the 1841 Census for Knowstone, Devon. Thomas Snow (65) born 1776 and Ann
Snow are living in The Mason-s arms Pub
in Knowstone. The pub is still trading under the same name. It has
been an Inn since 1400. ***
From this date, the Snow family and their desendants ran the Masons Arms
until at least 1901.
By the 1861 census, the son (Thomas) of Thomas and Ann is now running the
Masons Arms, whilst the slightly younger son, Edward, is a farmer at
Traceys Farm; their son, Charles Snow is born in 1864.

1901 George Snow had a house built in Dulverton, Exmoor (6 miles from
Knowstone) the house is still there. The family would arrive from London by
train having sent servants down earlier to open up the house. George-s
brothers and their families would also visit. They never forgot their roots.
The Snows came for the country pursuits which were very popular /
fashionable at that time. It was normal for hunting visitors to come for an
extended period (perhaps most of the hunting season) and in effect transfer
the house and it-s servants for the duration. Good rail-links from Dulverton
meant that George Snow could get back up to London by train during the week
for business. In the 1911 census George Snow, the servants and most of his
family were resident on Exmoor having left a son in the London house without
servants.
